5 Best Chicken Coops - Reviews & Guide

Finding the best chicken coop is not too tough of a task. It depends on how much money you are willing to pay and how many chickens you are planning to keep in it. Larger coops are better generally because they provide a secure and large space for the birds to run, thus improving the egg yields. There are many high-quality chicken coops that you can buy for your hens but keep in mind always that you need to examine the product properly before investing your money.

Raising chickens is one of those hobbies that when done right can reap off huge benefits. Maybe it’s for the industrial value (for their meat and eggs), for their value as pets (chickens are actually better pets than you think), or just for something innovative to invest your time in, whatever your motives for raising chickens, you can succeed if you know what you are doing. One of the best ways to increase the chances of success is to create an excellent home for your new pets. This is where chicken coops come into the picture.

Chicken coops are constructed in a way that they can give sufficient shelter to the chickens as sheltering is an important aspect of raising any type of animal. A properly constructed coop protects your chickens from both extreme weather conditions and predators. It is a simple way to show that you really care about providing the best treatment for your hens.

Are you looking for a chicken coop that can help you enhance your farm? Or are you the average citizen seeking an ongoing food supply, without spending lots of money? If your answer is yes to either of these two questions, chances are that finding the right chicken coop can help you achieve your goals.

Anybody who wants to grow chickens will come across this problem sooner or later — the moment when you have to select from among the hundred different kinds of chicken coops that are available on the market.

It can be a truly daunting task, and the fact is that you can easily end up wasting your precious time and lots of money trying to figure out what you need in a chicken coop.

It can be easier.  With proper guidance and an idea of what you’re looking for, selecting the right chicken coop will be as simple as choosing a new brand of shampoo.

What Goes on Inside the Coop?

Best Chicken Coop – Reviews & Guide

If you don’t have an idea about what the chickens do inside the chicken coop, then stop shopping for a coop and read up more on your chickens. But in case you’re a little bit lazy, here’s a good refresher for you:

Chickens spend almost ninety percent of their time inside the coop. Chicken coops are usually the homes for the chickens, and they will rest here, lay their eggs there, most likely feed here, and probably even die here.

This will also be where you will grow new chickens. A spot inside your coop will be reserved for the incubator.

There should be proper ventilation to make it comfortable for the hens.

With these basic things in your mind, you can now go on and start planning for your coop. You should consider the size and the materials that you are looking for in a coop.

Materials and Size

How big and spacious should your chicken coop be? This can be determined by asking yourself two simple questions:

  • How many chickens do you intend to keep in it?
  • How big is your backyard or roof?

These will help you to determine the size of the chicken coop, and you will be able to end up with a good buy.

As for the materials you are looking for for your coop, remember the three rules of location.

It should have an automatic feeder and spaces for the chickens’ food and water.

First, if your location experiences rough weather much of the year, you’re better off with a chicken coop that uses strong base materials.

Secondly, if you have a big backyard, you can set up a chicken coop with a decent fence, a makeshift shed. Just get one with nesting boxes for your hens.

Thirdly, you need to consider what your local chicken predators are. Coyotes do more damage than raccoons.

Know your territory first, and your chicken coop will be successful. Selecting the right one requires that you know what you need.

Key Features and My Experience

This is not a single brand or an ownership company, but the product comes from a specific brand under the lineup of the Aosom conglomerate. If you are looking for a durable but reasonably priced coop, then this should be your choice. You can go for this product for lots of reasons. It comes with a number of qualities. This is not a roost but a prefabricated chicken coop. This is a larger size home for your hens while they are sleeping and comes with flexible sleeping arrangements so that they can sleep comfortably within the coop.

It comes with a nesting box and also a high-quality removable divider. This system is worth having in your chicken coop.
This wooden chicken coop comes with a window and window door, and this can give you easy access to the eggs.  The openings of the coop are properly covered with high-quality hardware cloth. These covers are large in size and allow light to come in so that the hens will never suffer the disruption of the circadian cycle of egg-laying, which is quite common in the closed chicken coops that are available on the market. Like many people, if you are a fan of raising poultry then you will love this product — it comes with traditional looks but smart functions.

This chicken coop is perfect for chickens and other fowl. It comes with a large run that is made of strong, heavy-duty wire that keeps the chicken safe against predators.

This easily removable run allows you to move the run around your yard. Everyone wants to have a coop that is easy to clean and has a sliding droppings tray. It can hold more than 4 chickens at a time depending on the size, breed, and so on. Firwood construction and waterproof paint coating give it a different and sophisticated look.  On the side of the coop, there is a nesting box and more than one door, making it easy to collect eggs.  The design makes it unique and stands apart from the other chicken coops that are available on the market. Keeping it clean and germ-free is easy as there are sliding trays for droppings. Weatherproof eco-friendly color paint and sturdy construction are best for long-lasting use.

My Overall Impression

First off, I would like to say that I love the design of this Pawhut chicken coop. I love the way it gives enough room for your chickens to rest and lay eggs. Due to its design, it is very easy to clean and maintain. I also noticed that this product is one of the best-closed chicken coops which are available in the market today. The downside to this product is that the wood is too soft compared with most coops and it has a small feeder space but apart from that, this is a great product I recommend.

Pros
  • Nesting boxes for the hens to lay eggs that allow the owners to collect the eggs easily.
  • Made of weatherproof good quality wood.
  • It comes with a large-sized run.
  • It provides an ample number of roosts.
  • Quite easy to assemble.
  • Sliding tray to clean up the dirt and droppings.
  • Excellent design.
  • Properly ventilated.
  • Enough roomy and lets the light come in.
Cons
  • Two or one nesting boxes only.
  • Small feeder space.
  • Softer wood.

Key Features and My Experience

The Tangkula chicken coop has caught my eyes simply because of its practicality and looks. I actually have to include that when I first saw it, it struck me as being more like a rabbit coop rather than housing. However, apart from the fact that it looks and qualifies more like a chicken coop, it may act as a place to train your birds. With this chicken coop from Tangkula, keeping and raising little animals like chickens, hen and chicks is an even more easy job. Just like us, they justify all great concern for their stamina. For the fact that this Tangkula product made it to the top 10 list of the best chicken coop, you would know that it could accommodate a high number of chicks and chickens.

It comes with two different layers: the housing area and the nesting box.  The nesting box that this product comes with is connected to the bottom layer of the product using a light but strong ramp. The housing area is strategically raised which is good in case you want to keep it at a place that is prone to floor with rain. The roof also protects the product due to the fact that it is waterproof and is made out of a green asphalt composite.

Under the housing area is a layer with a sliding tray that is removable with ergonomic handles which makes cleaning a breeze for each user.

When users purchase this product, they would find that everything about this chicken coop feels solid and well built. From the strong galvanized wire which protects your creatures from other creatures or from getting out to three doors that leads and has access to the structure. This product is actually one that deserves more praise and recognition more than it has right now.  It can carry birds and other smaller animals acting as a natural breeding system.

Johnny Hunt

My Overall Impression

All the products written on my top 10 guides are close to being the best chicken coops you can ever get in the market. With this chicken coop, Tangkula gives you a deluxe set that is completely made out of natural wood with natural waterproof finishing. This product measures about 58″ and it uses 12mm wood. It comes with two housing units for your chicks added with many windows and doors for space and ventilation. The second level has a tray that can slide out for cleaning and maintenance purposes. This product guarantees users a very durable structure at a very affordable price.

Pros
  • It has removable sliding trays.
  • It is easy to clean.
  • The ramp has a non-slip feature.
  • There are latches on the door.
  • The Cedarwood is erosion-free.
Cons
  • It is a bit small compared to other products on this list.
  • The cedar wood is substantial.

Key Features and My Experience

If you are looking for a stylish but durable home for your hens, this product can be a good add-on to your backyard farm. Formex is not a new brand, but the brand has been amazing its users since 1961. This large-size chicken coop is made of high-quality plastic that makes it a safe and durable shelter for the birds. It comes with 4 nesting places. The plastic material of the coop is highly durable and sturdy.

You don’t need any external tools to set up the coop in your backyard because this is truly easy to assemble. You just need to snap all the parts together.

This product is also chemical and water-resistant. It has a good combination of plastic and rural backdrops. But before buying your chicken coop, you need to consider a few important points on the topic.  This is a Georgia-based item that wasn’t designed for super cold weather and has not witnessed many shifts in temperature.   These points are important to consider because plastic has a natural tendency to degrade in different environmental conditions. If you are looking for a traditional style vintage chicken coop, this may be the right choice for you as it looks like a large red barn.  This is a spacious coop to accommodate several sleeping hens at a time.  Your hens will have enough room to play or run around inside it also. The run of the coop is enclosed with mesh that allows the chickens to roam freely. There is also an overhead cover to keep the hens under a comfortable shade when the scorching heat of the day is pounding down.

You don’t need to worry a lot about the chickens getting out because the doors are properly equipped with high-quality spring bolt latches that provide you with extra security against predators.

Get your own peace of mind knowing that the plastic materials used by the brand have lots of advantages and are safe to use. First, these are the most hygienic chicken coops available on the market. The design of the coops allows you easy access to collect the eggs and clean out the nesting area.  The grey color of the rooftop can deflect the summer heat and cool down the temperature inside the coops.  This is a highly recommended product.

My Overall Impression

When you look at the Large SnapLock Formex, you find out that the company has been doing a great job providing its customers with a durable product. Although it is not suitable for very cold climates, this product is built to withstand chemicals and rainwater. Setting up this chicken coop is also easy as you do not need any external tools to help you with the process. Just snap and lock and you are good to go. I totally recommend this product.

Pros
  • It is large in size so that there is enough room for the hens to run around inside the coop.
  • Easy to set up.
  • Very much functional.
  • No dry rotting with it.
Cons
  • Perches are a little bit closer to its NB.

Key Features and My Experience

In search of an easily accessible and spacious chicken coop? Give the TRIXIE a try. This is a top-rated chicken coop that comes with two different sleeping houses as well as removable roosting poles, sliding ramps, and doors.  There is a large outdoor run for the chickens to roam during the daytime.  Top and front doors are best for easy access to your hens. This one is recommended to keep 6 chickens at a time. If you dream of being a farmer and would love to raise your own chickens in your own backyard, then having a chicken coop can be a rewarding and fun experience for you.

Chickens love to roam around and love to stretch their wings, so these large-sized wooden coops are perfect since they allow your chicken the space to roam around safe and secure. It comes with a traditional design that allows your chickens to roam as they want — upstairs, downstairs, inside, and outside the coop, as it has a large run.

To restrict access, there is also a sliding door that is designed at its ramp’s top. On the upper level, there is a removable roosting pole.  The large size nesting box of the coop can easily be converted into two different nesting boxes with the help of the removable divider.   Most of the interesting parts of the coop — including both the nesting box and the coop itself — have the locking arm-hinged roof that you will be able to open from the top easily.  To save your lively folks from predators, there is the galvanized mesh metal grid.  As your hen’s flap, peck, and stretch there is also the lower-wood paneling to protect them from the wind. Beautiful pine color paint gives it a unique but traditional look that comes with a weatherproof finish. With a little bit of care, it can give you a longer period of service. This can be a perfect home for four batman hens at a time or two normal chickens.

My Overall Impression

Trixie for years has been known to be a loyal producer of chicken coop houses and this Trixie chicken coop is no exception to its unique designs. I found out that this coop can take care of about 6 chickens at the same time. There seems to be enough space for this number of birds to roam freely. With this Trixie chicken coop, you do have to worry about rain. The paint used in this product helps protect it from water and rain. I do recommend this product.

Pros
  • Spacious for the chickens to roam.
  • Removing sliding trays for easy cleanup.
Cons
  • Good for a number of chickens.

With the combination of style, function, and durability, you would find out that this product from Pawhut is the perfect choice for your chicks and their family.  One thing I don’t like about this product is the assembling or the setting up.  The company didn’t include a manual which makes it easy for users to follow instructions and set up their products in no time.

Key Features and My Experience

This option is from the Merax Brand and it is a compatible hen house that is convenient and makes a good space for a handful of chicks or a mother hen with her baby chicks. This product is a great chicken coop that can. It can take up to 2 birds and the company created it to have a double-level design. The main coop of this product is located in the upper region of the coop and the manufacturers included an in-built ramp to go down to their play space or up to the resting room.  The body of this chicken coop is made out of a high-quality kiln-dried fir wood that is painted or coated for waterproof qualities that protects your product from the scorching sun and unstable weather.  The coop is also designed to protect your chicks from bad weather conditions or harsh situations. There is also a roof over their heads so they get to come out from time to time whether it is raining or not to do some exercise.

The lower part of the coop or the run space is well ventilated and it is also protected by a strong wire mesh which makes it possible for your chicken to be out of any predator’s way. A big plus for users is the tray under the hutch, this component has an easy-to-pull handle which makes cleaning a breeze for owners. You will not also suffer to assemble and set up this product.

There are about two nesting boxes that your animals can use but if you decide that the chicks rest more, you can get rid of the ramp so that your birds stay inside the coop without coming out.

Like I said already, you shouldn’t be worried about complicating things when setting up this product because it can be easily handled by just two persons. Your birds would enjoy a convenient but space out and airy space and you would have a healthier chicken and much bigger eggs.

Key Features and My Experience

Natives keep chicks for a lot of reasons but one of the main reasons is for commercial purposes. For you to increase your economical value or maximize profit margin, this 62″ Rabbit chicken coop is the best option for you out there. This product places a special runway to your birds and it is spacious considering the fact that it can fit a handful of chicks. The interior part of this product is intelligently designed as the hutch is found to be totally different from the resting area. This part of the chicken coop helps keep eggs safely while preventing the accidental spoilage of any eggs.  Sedimentation is isolated from the users to perfectly obtain more eggs for the potential.  On the bright side, the blow makes the development through the cooperative simple. I love how this product looks like.

It is made from furniture-grade wood which is coated with a waterproof painting to protect it in harsh weather be it snow or rain. The roof also protects the chickens while the ground gives them a play area to stretch their tiny legs.

This product gives farmers proper ventilation for their chicks so they can be comfortable throughout their stay. The windows and doors are tightly protected with a wire mesh which is made out of stainless steel material. Just as I stated above, this product is spacious enough to fit a number of birds. They can fit a handful of chicks and as they get older, you can upgrade to another spacious coop or add another to your selection. For more comfortable housing, the company advised users can fit about 2-3 grown birds at once in this amazing product. This product is made out of lightweight cedar which is as tall as 4 feet and it is lightweight making it possible to be moved anywhere at any time.

My Overall Impression

This product is a fairly large-sized chicken coop that is best suited in your backyard due to the compact space. This chicken coop set can also be used as an animal hutch, one which has a wide ventilated area and a comfortable nesting place. This product comes with about two doors which vary in size but they can be locked too. The larger door covers the run area while the smaller door which boasts of a mesh window handles the top floor. Both doors offer ramps for your chicks and it won’t subdue under their weight. It also has an opening top that gives users access to the nest box.

  • The mesh is made up of a high-strength steel cable.
  • It has a built-in execution area.

Key Features and My Experience

This chicken coop from Aivituvin is another astounding edition for your backyard. It is very spacious and it can help users keep their chickens and chicks safely without any complications. It is so spacious that it can also be used as a rabbit hutch in certain cases. The wooden frame of this product is painted with a silver-grey coating with a darker coating around the compartment in which chickens breed and lay their eggs. There is an enclosed area that gives your chickens privacy to do whatever they want to do. There is also a ramp that measures up to 4 feet which connects the upper and the lower compartment of the chicken coop. This coop also comes with a free metal feeder that users can fix on the wall of the structure. You can dress there so that your chicks can be relaxed in that environment to produce healthier and bigger eggs.

There are three removable layers which make cleaning a breeze for all users.  One is located under the seeping compartment for easy collection of eggs and the other two compartments are located side by side under the runway of the product. They are coated with plastic so they can be easily cleaned.

There is a wire mesh located all around the coop to make sure your chickens are safe from any type of predator.
Where I don’t like this product is that the runway and free exterior space are not covered with a roof  but it also came with alternative roof users can fix. This makes water easily permeable to the structure when it is not put up. If you want to keep this structure in your backyard, you always have to be sure that your chickens are tucked in tightly in the sleeping compartment and the runway is closed too. The full coop is constructed on a steady and sturdy floor which has about 6 wheels for easy movement. This coop is very roomy and it can contain as many birds as most products on this list.

Johnny Hunt

My Overall Impression

Amongst most chicken coops I have researched, this product from Aivituvin is the best choice for users who want to keep more than 4 birds. It is, of course, stylish, secure, sturdy, and safe for your chickens. It is made out of firewood surrounded by a galvanized mesh wire for ventilation. The roof of this chicken coop is also made out of waterproof asphalt material. The bottom part of the nesting house is designed with PVC making it easier for you to clean the innermost section of your coop. The only feature I don’t like about this product is the shabby or low-quality painting. Although it is waterproof, users can resort to adding their own coating if they do not like the current one.

Pros
  • It is made out of natural Fir wood.
  • It is perfect for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • It is very spacious for your birds.
  • It is waterproof and can withstand harsh weather.
Cons
  • It has a shabby coating.

Things to Keep in Mind:

Space

Three square feet of coop space for every chicken is the minimum to foster comfort and good health for your birds. If you have more birds, four square feet are better. Note well, these minimum sizes are for chickens that will have access to a chicken run or a fenced chicken yard.

Feeding

Food should be dispensed into a tray to accommodate a satisfactory table height, about six to eight inches off the floor of the coop. Some come with reservoirs that dispense more food as per necessity. The removable food trays are very easy to keep clean.

Watering

Watering devices should have trays or bowls at about the same height as the feeders. These too can be had with reservoirs to keep the water level constant. Be sure that the coop you are buying, or its attachments, allows you to keep the water bowl and the water reservoirs clean — it is easy to change the water.
